Merriam- Webster Online

The Merriam-Webster Online is an online dictionary and a thesaurus created by various departments at Merriam-Webster, Inc.  and is administered and maintained by Merriam-Webster’s Electronic Product Development team. This online web also includes a Spanish-English Dictionary and a Medical Dictionary.

It has been published in paper, too and is America’s best-selling dictionary.  It started publishing in 1831.  It was created by Noah Webster and George and Charles Merriam and is now run by Merriam-Webster Incorporate, Springfield, Massachusetts, which since 1964 has been subsidiary of the Encyclopedia Britannica Company.

Many other dictionaries have been launched by this company: Webster’s Third New International, Merriam-Webster’s Geographical Dictionary, Merriam- Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary, etc.

The working team of this online dictionary is composed by Michael Guzzi (Director of Electronic Product Development), Shawn Broussard (Web Developer), Syd Seale (Content Coordinator), Dan Pawlowski (Web Production Assistant) and Vicky Harley (Technical Support).

This online dictionary includes a dictionary, a thesaurus, an English-Spanish translator and a Medical terminology dictionary.  It also offers the word of the day, word games, spelling bee hive and an online store.

These are just some examples of how Merriam-Webster’s dictionary offers its entries.  As we can see, besaides the meaning, the etimology of the word, the pronuntiation and synonyms are given.
